Showerthought: The '5 second rule' for dropped food is actually backed by real science
I always thought the 5 second rule was just something my mom made up to save a cookie off the kitchen floor. But last week I was listening to a podcast about food safety and a researcher said bacteria transfer happens almost instantly, like under a second. They tested it on tile, carpet, and wood with different foods. The surprising stat was that wetter foods like watermelon picked up the most germs in that split second, way more than a dry cracker. So my whole life I've been safe eating dropped chips while my buddy freaks out over nothing. But then they also said the floor type matters more than time, carpet is actually safer than tile. I've been tossing perfectly good snacks because of a myth that's half true. Has anyone else believed something like this for years and then found out the reality is way more complicated?

Bro dropped an apple in a parking lot and ate it, that's commitment right there.

Carpet being safer is wild" really got me lol. I always thought rug was the grossest, but now I'm rethinking all my life choices.

Man that watermelon stat got me. I dropped a slice of apple in the parking lot last week and ate it without thinking. Now I'm questioning every snack I've ever rescued from the floor. Carpet being safer is wild too, my mom always said carpet was the worst because of all the dust and pet hair. Turns out tile is basically a germ highway. Makes me wonder how many times I've been eating literal floor bacteria thinking I was fine.
