The landscaper who called my dead lawn 'a conversation' changed how I read soil

Back in March I noticed my front yard in Columbus was patchy and gray while the neighbor's lot stayed green. I figured it needed more water or some fancy fertilizer, so I dropped $140 on treatments that did nothing. Then a landscaper doing work two houses down walked over and asked if he could dig a finger into my dirt. He had me stick a screwdriver in the ground, and sure enough it bent against the hardpan. I rented an aerator for $38, ran it twice in one weekend, and within three weeks the grass grew back thick. That aerator rental is a solid tool, but running it twice in one weekend might be overkill on clay. You can actually shred the soil structure if you go at it when it's still wet, which turns it into a cement-like mess once it dries. Wait about a month between passes, and make sure the ground is slightly damp, not soaked, before you run it. Also, those $38 rentals from the big box stores often have dull tines that just punch holes without pulling cores. Check the machine before you leave the lot, bent or worn tines waste your time. The screwdriver trick is legit though, that's how I check my own yard every spring. Good call on the fix, just pace yourself next time.
