Figured out my 5th grade memory of getting lost at Opry Mills mall by asking my mom one specific thing
I could never place what year it was, just that I was little and scared, so I finally asked my mom what she was wearing and she said her red coat and it all came back in one shot. Turns out asking for one dumb detail unlocks the whole scene better than trying to remember it straight on. Anyone else use a random detail to dig up an old memory?
Try asking about a smell or a song from that day next time, those tend to hit even harder than what someone was wearing. Your brain stores weird little pieces and one of them is usually the key that turns the whole thing on. Worked for me with an old vacation I could not place for years until I remembered the tape playing in the car.
