Getting locked out of my apartment at 3am last Tuesday changed how I think about spare keys

I had to climb through a neighbor's window at 2:45am because I left my keys inside after taking out trash, and now I keep a spare in my car's magnetic box. Has anyone else had a dumb lockout moment that made you rethink your whole system?

My neighbor Phil keeps a key under his ceramic frog and that saved me once when I got locked out in my bathrobe taking out recycling. I started using a combination lockbox on my back porch railing instead since magnetic boxes can fall off sometimes. Now I just punch in 4 numbers if I forget my keys inside. It's been two years and no issues with rust or anything.

Agree with you there Linda. I switched to a combination lockbox after seeing how many people in our neighborhood actually know about everyone's fake rock hiding spots.

Magnetic ones are fine if you actually put them in a spot that isn't obvious. A lockbox just tells a thief "hey there's something valuable inside".
