Got yelled at by a foreman for skipping the measuring step on a fence run back in '09

I was installing a 200 foot chain link fence in Pensacola and he made me redo the whole first section after I guessed the post spacing, and now I measure everything twice even for small jobs because that one mistake cost us 2 extra hours what do you do when you're in a hurry and know the tape measure will slow you down?

So you're saying knowing the right spacing wasn't worth the extra five minutes with the tape? If the foreman was so worried about time, wouldn't a redo cost way more than just measuring right the first time?

Yeah @jade_jenkins, I learned that lesson the hard way on a deck job. Took the extra time to space everything right the first time and the foreman actually thanked me for it.

@patricia_gonzalez nailed it, the redo ALWAYS costs way more than the few minutes of measuring. I learned that same lesson on a fence job and now I keep a tape in my pocket at ALL times, even for tiny tasks. That extra minute with the tape saves you from ripping your hair out later when stuff doesn't line up.
