My 6th grade teacher said one sentence about the Challenger and I still hear it
I was sitting in Mrs. Patterson's class in Ohio in January 1986 when a teacher walked in and whispered something to her. She turned to us and said, plain as anything, "the shuttle just blew up." I was 11 and had no idea what to do with that, so I just stared at the TV cart they rolled in. What stuck with me is that she didn't make it a lesson or tell us how to feel, she just let us sit there with it. Now when something bad happens at work, I try to do the same thing, say it straight and give people a minute. I still think about how a room full of kids got quiet all at once. Did anyone else have a teacher handle a hard moment like that?
