My dad's 15 minute rule for finding lost stuff has saved me 3 hours this month
When I was 9 my dad lost his truck keys and tore the whole garage apart for an hour before finding them in the freezer next to the ice cream. He sat me down after and said the trick is to go back to the last place you were happy, because that's where your brain let go of what you were holding. I thought it was nonsense until last week when I lost my wallet with $200 in it before a showing in Round Rock and found it in 4 minutes sitting on top of my coffee maker. I had grabbed coffee right before I left, felt good about the day, and set the wallet down while I stirred. Now when I lose something I don't search, I just walk back through where I was calm. It sounds dumb but I've used it for keys, my phone, a client's signed addendum, and my kid's shoes. My wife thinks it's a coincidence but she started doing it too and won't admit it. What's the weirdest trick you stole from your parents that actually works?
Going back to where you were happy is just you retracing your steps with extra steps. Your dad basically taught you to slow down and think instead of tearing the garage apart, which is the real trick. The freezer thing was just him being old and distracted, not some deep brain science.
