Pro tip: Don't fall for those cheap digital meat thermometers

I bought a 4-pack of digital meat thermometers off an online deal for $12. They looked fine in the package but the first one I used was off by nearly 20 degrees. Ruined a $30 pork shoulder because I pulled it too early thinking it was done. The other three i tested against boiling water and they were all wrong in different ways. Ended up throwing the whole pack out and buying a single Thermapen for $85. Has anyone else had bad luck with those cheap multi-packs?

The "chicken looking like it fell off a dinosaur" is exactly the kinda visual that sticks with you, @the_linda. A buddy of mine bought one of those cheap packs and tried to smoke a brisket for a party, only to find out later his "done" reading was actually 50 degrees low. The whole party ended up eating cold sandwiches while he cursed at a half raw piece of meat in the smoker for another four hours.

My husband bought a cheap digital meat thermometer from a gas station once and it read 98 degrees when held against ice. We used it anyway for grilled chicken. The chicken came out looking like it fell off a dinosaur. Dry, grey, completely wrecked like a science experiment gone wrong. I still give him grief about it three years later.

Eighty five bucks for a thermometer seems a little excessive.
