The 1984 county fair fire drill that still shapes my mornings

I was 8 at the Pima County Fair in Tucson when the sprinklers went off over the livestock barn, no fire, just a faulty valve. That panic, everyone pushing toward the same gate, taught me to always scope exits before I commit to any spot, even at a coffee shop. It's why I pick seats near the back door and never face the wall, which sounds paranoid but has saved me twice during crowded events. Anyone else have a childhood scare that turned into a lifelong habit?

I read a piece once about how panic spreads faster than the actual danger in crowds, and your story backs that up perfectly. That gate everyone was pushing toward probably became a bottleneck too, which is the worst part. The "scope exits before I commit" habit is something I picked up after hearing about a nightclub incident where people went to the same door they came in even though there were clearer exits. It's not paranoia when you've seen how fast a calm room turns into a mess, it's just learning how people actually react. I do the same thing with seating now, always facing the room and knowing the second way out. Glad that faulty valve at least taught you something that sticks, even if it cost you a peaceful coffee shop vibe.
