The way I was holding a pencil in second grade finally made sense at 27
I was watching my niece draw and she had the same weird grip I used to have, and my mom just said, 'You know, your teacher Mrs. Jenkins tried to fix that for months in 1998, but you were so stubborn.'

Wait, that's not exactly right. The teacher was trying to fix my grip, but it wasn't about being stubborn. I just couldn't hold it the normal way without my hand cramping up. Turns out I have some joint hypermobility thing, and that weird grip was the only way I could get enough control. It's funny how they just called me difficult instead of figuring out the real reason.

Read an article about how hypermobility often gets missed in schools. They said teachers mistake it for bad behavior when kids can't do things the standard way. Makes you wonder how many "problem" students just needed someone to look deeper.
