The way people misremember family vacations drives me crazy
I was at a party last weekend and some guy was going on about this huge beach trip his family took in 1998. He talked about the boardwalk, the arcade, the big waves. Thing is, I was there with my family too, we ran into them at a pizza place. He forgot the part where his little brother got stung by a jellyfish and they spent 3 hours in the urgent care. He forgot how his dad screamed at the rental car lady over a scratch. His memory is all the good stuff, none of the rough stuff. My core memory from that exact trip is my mom crying in the hotel bathroom because she felt bad we didn't have enough money for the good seats on the ferry. So now when people tell me about their perfect childhood memories, I just nod and wonder what they're leaving out. Anyone else feel like their "funniest" memories only exist because something else went wrong first?

Same thing with my family's Disney trip - everyone forgets the five hour rental car breakdown in the rain.

Five hours? In the rain? That's rough. What did your family even do to pass the time, just sit there and stare at each other? Was it a beat up old rental that broke down or one of those newer ones with all the electronics?

Keep the car lock and phone charged, @nathan901, a portable jump starter saves trips like that.
