A client's hair color correction that should have been a day but took three

Had a client come in with box black dye over old highlights, wanting a warm caramel brown. I figured one session, maybe five hours tops. The color wouldn't lift evenly, and after two rounds of color remover and careful lightening, I was still dealing with banding. It ended up being three separate appointments over eight days total chair time. Anyone else have a color correction that spiraled way beyond the initial plan?

Honestly, I was totally in the flat rate camp for years. But a nightmare correction like that is exactly why I switched to hourly. You just can't know what's under that box dye sometimes. Charging for the actual time protects you from losing money on a three day project you quoted for one. It feels more fair to both of us in the end.

Ever think about charging a flat project rate instead of by the hour for these?

Switched to a flat rate with a clear change order process for anything unexpected.
