I finally had to say no to a friend's haircut request

My close friend wanted me to cut her hair very short for a new job, but I knew it didn't suit her face shape. It felt wrong to do something that might make her unhappy just because she asked. I suggested a softer style that would work better for her. She was upset at first, but later thanked me for being honest. Sometimes, protecting a client's confidence is more important than pleasing them in the moment.

My sister asked me to cut her bangs straight across when she was 18. I did it, even though I knew it was a bad idea for her round face. She cried for a week. That was twenty years ago, and I still feel bad about it. Wyatt_mitchell26 is right about protecting confidence. Now I always speak up gently if I see a style that will cause regret.

Protecting confidence like that avoids future regret.

Keep your cards close, saves headaches later.

Yeah, I used to believe the opposite, that oversharing built real trust. Watching a few people use my own doubts against me changed that pretty fast. The regret isn't from holding back, it's from giving someone ammo for later. Keeping some things quiet just saves you from a lot of pointless self-criticism down the line.
