My mentor said to charge by the hour, not the style, and it fixed my whole year.

She told me this after I lost a full day on a complex color correction for a flat rate of $150. I switched to hourly billing for custom work and my income jumped by 40% in three months. How do you all price out services that could go sideways?

A full day's work for only 150 bucks? That's brutal. Hourly billing saved your skin for sure.

Wait, did you mean to say 150 for the whole day? I thought it was 150 an hour.

Read it as 150 for the whole day.

Reminds me of my cousin who took a flat rate to paint a whole house. Took him three days and he made maybe 200 bucks total. He learned that lesson the hard way. Now he charges by the room or won't even take the job. Some people just don't value labor until they see the hourly breakdown.
