Showerthought: The sudden boom in gel manicure shops on my block is killing small nail techs.

In the last six months, five new spots opened within two miles of my salon, all doing cheap gel sets. They undercut prices so low that regulars are jumping ship for a quick fix. It's not sustainable and will leave clients with damaged nails when these pop-ups close. We need to push back by educating people on real nail health, not just flashy trends.

Actually gel pods can be reused a few times if they're stored right, it's not always single use. The plastic files are the bigger issue, those just get tossed after one client.

Nobody's talking about the trash these places must generate. All those single-use gel pods and plastic files add up fast. Landfills near me are seeing more beauty waste, and it's not pretty. Long term, we're trading nail health for a bigger mess.

Noticed the same thing with coffee pods and all the plastic from online orders. Honestly feels like every small treat now comes with a mountain of trash you can't avoid. Trying to cut down feels impossible when even a simple manicure adds to the pile. It's death by a thousand cuts, just tiny bits of plastic all adding up.

My local salon goes through a box of those plastic nail files every single day. I asked once and they just shrugged, said it's policy for hygiene. It feels like a huge step back when you see the little trash can overflowing with them by closing time. You're right that we don't talk about it enough because the waste is hidden from the customer. It makes the whole experience feel less relaxing when you know where it all ends up.
