That one client who told me to stop using so much hair spray ended up being right

I had this older lady, Mrs. Chen, who comes in every 6 weeks for a perm. She kept saying I was overdoing it with the finishing spray, that it was making her hair feel crunchy. I thought I knew better because I always used the good professional stuff. Finally after like 4 appointments of her mentioning it, I cut back by half last Tuesday and her waves actually held better and she said it felt soft for the first time in months. Has anyone else had a client call you out on something and they were totally spot on?

It's funny how we get so used to doing things a certain way that we stop really paying attention to what's working. Mrs. Chen was probably just better at noticing what her hair actually needed than you were at seeing it from the outside. That whole thing reminds me of how sometimes the small adjustments we resist end up having the biggest results. Like how my husband kept saying I was overfilling the coffee filter and I finally tried less and it tastes way better. It's humbling when someone else sees a blind spot you didn't even know you had.

Totally. It’s wild how someone on the outside can spot stuff you’ve been missing for years. My friend Jen had this thing where she always used the same cheap shampoo and thought her hair looked fine. But her sister came over once, watched her wash it, and was like “you’re not even rinsing all the way, your roots are still soapy.” Jen brushed it off for a while, but finally tried actually scrubbing that extra minute. Hair’s way less greasy now, she said. She’d been fighting bad hair days for like a decade, and it was just a bad rinsing habit.
