TIL a client asked me to 'make her look like a potato' and I actually pulled it off

Last week this older woman sat in my chair and said she wanted a haircut that made her look like a potato because she was tired of people asking if she was trying to be cute, so I gave her a super short blunt bob with no layers and she cried happy tears has anyone else had a weird request like that turn out great?

You know, I gotta admit I used to be one of those people who'd see a woman with a short, no-nonsense cut and think "she must've just given up." Like my brain was trained to read that as defeat or something. But reading this story and that comment really hit me different. A potato haircut sounds boring on paper but thinking about it as taking control instead of giving up flips the whole thing. That client was probably tired of her hair being treated like a decoration for everyone else before she even sat in the chair. Makes me wonder how many other "boring" choices women make are actually them choosing themselves over what's expected.

See this is WHY I love this story because it exposes a HUGE double standard. When men get blunt, utilitarian haircuts nobody bats an eye. But a woman of a certain age asks for the same thing and suddenly she's "giving up" or "letting herself go". That client KNEW what she wanted and had the guts to ask for it directly. She was tired of performing cuteness for other people. That potato haircut wasn't about looking bad, it was about taking control and saying my face is enough, I don't need a hairstyle to make me more palatable to strangers. Good for her and good for you for listening without judgment.
