Tried that oxygen-based color remover and flushed $60 down the sink
I bought a pricey bottle of Color Oops from a salon supply store last month because I wanted to lift a dark box dye without bleach. Followed the instructions to the letter - waited the full 45 minutes, washed it out three times. My hair ended up this gross orangey-brown that looked like I had been swimming in a rusty pool. Had to pay another $80 for a corrective toner at a salon two days later. Has anyone actually had this stuff work on dark hair or did I just buy into the hype?

And that rusty color is exactly what happened to me too, @phoenixw11, so at least we're in the same sinking boat. The bottle should come with a warning that dark box dye just turns into a muddy mess more often than not. After that mess I swore off at-home color removers for good and just let a pro handle anything that involves lifting pigment.

Yeah but @miles_burns I gotta push back a little on one thing. Color Oops isn't really a "color remover" the same way bleach is. It shrinks the dye molecules so they rinse out, but it doesn't lift your natural pigment at all. So if you had dark box dye that was layered over lighter hair underneath, the rusty mess is actually the leftover red tones from whatever was in that dye formula. The product worked exactly how it was supposed to. It's the marketing that's garbage for making it sound like you'll get back to your original blonde or whatever.
