Update: I swore balayage was overhyped until a client brought in a photo from her trip to Lisbon
For about three years I turned down every balayage request at my chair in Tucson. I told people it was just a fancy word for highlights and that foils gave me more control, and honestly I was scared of melting hair with open air lightener. Last month a regular named Dana showed me a pic from a cafe in Lisbon, soft root melt, sun kissed ends, and she wanted exactly that for her wedding in April. I booked her a test strand on a Tuesday, used a clay based lightener with 15 volume, and painted it in V sections instead of my usual weave. It took me 2 hours and 40 minutes, way longer than foils, but the melt looked like she'd been at the beach for a week. I've now done 9 of them in 30 days and two clients booked me off Dana's Instagram post alone. So yeah, I was wrong, and my ego cost me a lot of money. Anyone got a favorite brush for getting that root shadow blended without dragging it too far down?
The "clay based lightener" part is what got me, that stuff is way more forgiving than I ever gave it credit for. The melt is really all about section size and how much you feather, not the brush brand. Just stop dragging once you hit that shadow line and you're fine.
