Vent: I was using a flat iron on wet hair for a full year
I know, I know. I just never thought about it. I'd towel dry, then go right in with my 1-inch Chi iron, thinking I was saving time. The sizzle and steam? I figured that was normal. The real wake-up call was a client last week who said, 'Wow, your iron sounds angry.' I looked at my own fried ends in the mirror that night and it clicked. I was basically boiling the water inside the hair shaft every single day. I've been doing this since I started at the salon in Tacoma. My manager would have killed me if she saw. Has anyone else had a basic habit they needed to break after way too long?

Describe the damage you saw. Was it just split ends or did your hair start breaking off in chunks? I'm trying to picture the texture after a year of daily steaming. Did it feel like straw all over, or was it just the ends that got totally fried?

Man, that sounds awful (and thanks for the details, @davis.noah), like turning your hair into dry, crunchy straw.

Oh my god, the visual. I'm just picturing your hair basically screaming in steam every morning. (Shoutout to @davis.noah for asking for the gory details, because I'm also deeply curious). It wasn't just split ends, it was like the whole length turned into this weird, crispy cotton candy. You could probably hear a faint crunching sound from the breakage. I bet running a brush through it sounded like walking on gravel. That's not styling, that's a science experiment gone wrong.
