A piece of advice from a retired operator that saved my hide last month

About ten years back, a guy named Frank who was about to retire told me, 'Always check your load block for a full turn before you even think about lifting.' He said he'd seen a sheave freeze up once on a job in Tacoma. I filed it away and mostly did it. Last month, on a site in Spokane, I did my usual check and the block wouldn't turn at all. The grease had hardened solid in the cold. If I'd tried to lift, I would have spooled the cable wrong and likely damaged it. Who else has a small, specific check they do that's saved them from a bigger problem?

Guess that old grease decided to retire before Frank did. Good thing you listened.

Man that's a solid point. Used to think a quick look was enough but now I'm wiping the glass too.

Honestly, I used to think checking the oil sight glass on the compressor was just a quick glance. Then one summer, the level looked fine but it was just dark from old oil, it was actually almost empty. Ran it dry for half a day before I caught it. Now I wipe that glass clean with a rag every single morning to get a real look. That little extra step probably saved me a whole new compressor unit.
