Can we talk about the crane setup at the Port of Savannah?

I was down in Savannah last month visiting a buddy who works the docks. He showed me how they stage their mobile cranes for unloading container ships. What caught my eye was how they use a simple chalk line to mark the outrigger positions before every lift. It keeps the setup consistent even when the ground shifts a little. Has anyone else tried marking positions ahead of time like that?

That chalk line trick is just good old fashioned consistency thinking, same reason mechanics torque bolts in a specific order instead of just winging it. Little systems like that pop up everywhere when you start paying attention, from how baristas queue their espresso shots to how I line up my desk before tax season.

Pretty sure that's just their standard safety check, not anything new.

Marking the outrigger positions saved my tail on a job in Mobile last year. Ground shifted between lifts and we didn't have to RE-level everything because the chalk marks showed exactly where we started.
