I used to laugh at guys who hand-signaled the load, but watching the guy on the barge off Pier 39 changed my mind
Been running lattice boom for 11 years and I always said radios or nothing for blind picks. Last Tuesday I watched an old boy working a barge just off Pier 39 in San Francisco, and his hand signals were cleaner than any radio call I've heard. He brought that load down within maybe 2 inches, smooth as glass, while the wind was pushing 15 knots off the bay. I still keep my radio on the seat, but I've started learning the hand signals now. Anyone here work with a signal guy who actually knows his stuff, or is it all radios on your jobs?
