Picked a rented crawler over my usual truck crane for that refinery job in Baton Rouge last week. Regretting it hard.

Had a tight window to set some exchanger bundles. My usual truck crane was booked so I grabbed a crawler instead. Big mistake on that hard stand. The tracks chewed up the asphalt way worse than I expected. Now I'm stuck dealing with the site super about the damage bill. Anyone else get burned by choosing rental gear over your own rig?

I mean, I used to be one of those guys who thought crawlers were just better for everything, more stable and all that. But after watching a buddy of mine try to squeeze an 80 ton Terex between two pipe racks on a soft lot and seeing those tracks just tear up the gravel and leave ruts everywhere, it changed my mind. That ended up costing him half his rental deposit in site restoration fees, plus the super was breathing down his neck for a week. Now I'm real careful about choosing a rig that matches the ground conditions, even if it means waiting an extra day for my own truck crane.

Oh man, @the_anthony, you just reminded me of a time we brought in a 50 ton Grove on tires for a tight refinery job and it saved us a ton of headache, no ruts and we were in and out in a day. Matching the rig to the ground really is everything, I learned that one the hard way too.
