Pro tip: check your rigging hardware before you leave the yard
I lost a full day's pay last Tuesday because I grabbed a shackle from my kit that looked fine, but the pin was worn just enough to slip under load. We had to stop the whole lift at a site in Boise, send someone for a new one, and re-rig. That was about $350 gone. Always give your gear a real good look, even the stuff you think you know. Anyone got a favorite brand for shackles that really holds up?

That bit about getting used to things being fine hits hard. It's not just gear, it's a mindset you have to fight. Complacency is the real safety hazard.

Ever notice how this happens with so much stuff we use every day? It's like we get used to things being fine, so we stop really seeing them. My old coffee maker almost caught fire because I never looked at the cord. That shackle was probably in your kit for years just slowly wearing down. Makes you wonder what else we're all trusting without a second look.
