Rant: A new guy on the site in Charlotte said 'it's just a big lever'

I heard a young operator on a job last week call a 200-ton mobile crane 'just a big lever'. He was talking to his buddy, not even trying to be quiet. It really got under my skin because it shows a total lack of respect for the physics and the risk. We're not just moving stuff, we're balancing thousands of pounds over people and property. Has anyone else had to deal with that kind of careless talk from new hires?

Okay but is it that deep though? It's literally a lever, that's just physics. New guys say dumb stuff all the time, it doesn't mean they don't get the risk. Maybe he was just trying to sound casual with his friend. Getting mad about shop talk seems like looking for a reason to be upset.

Disagree on this one. Calling a loaded press brake a lever shows a scary lack of respect for the machine. That casual talk is how bad habits and close calls start.

You think it's that big a deal?
