Six months into crane work before I learned luffing jibs aren't just for tall buildings

I spent like a year swearing at my luffing jib every time I used it on tight urban sites. Kept wondering why the load kept swinging weird. Finally a older operator at a job site in Denver watched me for like 30 seconds and asked why I was using the boom hoist instead of the jib luff cylinder for fine adjustments. I just never knew that was the better way to do it. Anyone else have a basic thing they missed for way too long?

Odd how nobody mentions the crane's carrier stability sensors often need recalibrating for luffing jib setups.

Oh man, @wilson.joseph you're spot on - I had a job last fall where we had to run through the recalibration process twice because the sensors kept throwing false stability warnings with the luffing jib. It's one of those things that's a total pain but nobody talks about until you're on site dealing with it.

Yeah, that's a rough one! I feel you on that. I had a similar thing with a Manitowoc where I kept fighting the luffing jib for months before a guy from the shop told me I was basically using the wrong cylinder for the job. Once you know, it's like a lightbulb goes off, but man, it's frustrating nobody just says it upfront. Feels like half this trade is just finding out the hard way.
