The 800 foot cable laydown that split our crew on brake usage

Last month on a job in Tulsa we were setting steel with a 150 ton crawler and I had two oilers going at each other about riding the brakes on the swing. One guy swears feathering the brake keeps the load steady in wind, the other says it cooks the linings and you should use the friction clutch instead. We finished the pick without damage but the tension stuck with me all week. Anyone else got a strong opinion on brake vs clutch feathering for precision work, or is it just a personal style thing?
