Finally clued in that I was pitching clients the wrong way for 2 years
Had a photographer friend in Seattle listen to my cold call pitch and she just said 'you sound like a robot reading a script.' That one comment made me realize I never once asked what they actually needed before listing my services. Anyone else had their whole approach flipped by one honest person?

you sound like a robot reading a script" - oh man, that would have stung to hear but wow, what a gift. I actually gasped when I read that because I bet a dozen people thought the same thing about my old pitch and never said a word. That takes guts from a friend too. I remember recording myself once and realizing I said "our services include" five times in two minutes. It's like we get so caught up in what we're selling that we forget the person on the other end has ears and feelings. You probably saved yourself years more of that robotic nonsense.

Friend of mine used to say "Let's circle back on that" so much in meetings we started counting. Hit seventeen once before lunch.

My own wake up call was when my uncle listened to one of my sales calls and just said "you sound like you're reading the back of a cereal box." Same thing happened with me too, I was so focused on listing features that I never paused to let the other person speak. Once I started asking what they actually needed first, the calls got way shorter and actually led somewhere.
