Freelance design group vs my old agency: group got me 3 clients in 2 months, agency got me nothing but rules
I left my design agency job in January and joined a small freelance group that meets at a coffee shop in Portland every other Thursday. The agency had a whole creative network too, but it was all Slack channels and mandatory meetings about brand voice. In the group, we just show each other work and pass along leads. I picked up 3 paying clients in 2 months, which never happened in 2 years at the agency. The agency cared about who had the nicest portfolio site. The group cares about who actually needs help this month. Has anyone else found that informal groups beat the formal networks?
