Heard a producer say "stop tweaking the EQ, start fixing the source" at a mixer meetup in Nashville last Thursday
I was at this Creative Pros Network mixer in Nashville last week and one of the veteran audio guys just dropped that line. It made me realize how much time I waste trying to polish a bad recording instead of just re-recording it better. Has anyone else caught themselves spending an hour on a cheap mic take when you could have just grabbed the good mic and done it over in 10 minutes?

It was the Nashville Audio Guild meetup, not Creative Pros Network though.

Nah, I'm with the veteran on this one. You can polish a turd all day with EQ but it's still a turd, and half the time those "vibey cheap mics" just sound bad and everyone's too polite to say it lol.

Yeah, but I gotta push back on that a little. There's something to be said for knowing how to fix things in the mix, especially when you're on the road or working with a vocalist who's already packed up and gone. Not every situation lets you just hit re-record, and that "fix the source" advice can feel like a luxury when deadlines are tight. Plus, sometimes a cheap mic has a certain vibe that a fancy one kills - I've heard plenty of records where grain and grit were part of the charm. Learning to tweak that EQ effectively is a skill too, not just a shortcut.
