My skepticism about this paid networking group faded after 3 months in Chicago

I joined a $200/year creative pros network last winter thinking it was just a cash grab with no real connections. By the time I landed a freelance gig from a referral at the third monthly meetup, I couldn't deny it was working. Has anyone else been surprised by a networking group they almost passed on?

What finally worked for me was asking for something super specific before committing, like "can you send me a sample of how you'd fix one paragraph of my mess?" If they can't or won't do that, it's usually a red flag. Also started checking if they have any actual reviews or a portfolio that isn't just screenshots. Sometimes paying a little more for someone who shows you real proof upfront saves you the headache of a refund fight later.
