Our shared drive died 2 hours before a client pitch, here's the 20 minute fix that saved us
Last Thursday around 4pm our studio's shared drive just vanished from the network, and we had a client pitch at 6. I'm the only one who handles IT stuff at our five person shop in Boise, so everyone looked at me while I tried not to panic. I ran down to the server closet and the little NAS box was still humming, lights blinking like nothing was wrong, but nobody could see it on any machine. Turns out the router had handed out a new IP to the NAS after a power blip, and all our mapped drives were still pointing at the old address. I logged into the router admin page, found the NAS on the new IP, and set a static reservation so it can't move again. Then I remapped the drives on four laptops with a quick script, maybe 20 minutes total. We walked into that pitch with the files, and now I keep a printed cheat sheet taped inside the closet door with the admin login and the static IP written on it. What's your go to move when a shared drive drops right before a deadline?
