I was on a small animation job and she walked me through how she layers breath and pause timing, even showing me three takes of one line. Has anyone else had a pro share a trick that completely changed how you listen to audio work?

Man, that's the kind of stuff you can't unhear once you know it. Did she explain how she decides where the breath lands when the line has a bunch of commas, or is it more about the pause before the important word? I've noticed some actors breathe right before the punchline and it changes the whole feel, but I can't tell if that's planned or just habit.
