A spilled drink at the park gave me a villain's origin story

I was people-watching when a kid dropped his juice. It made me think about how small moments can build entire characters.

That bit about small moments building characters is so true! I was just listening to a podcast where a writer said the best backstories often come from one tiny, relatable detail. It makes the whole thing feel real instead of just a big dramatic event.

Disagree with you, @abbynelson. Big dramatic events create deeper backstories because they test characters under real pressure. Small details just skim the surface.

Ever listen to those radio shows where they read short stories during the drive time? Heard one last week about a guy who always saved the cherry from his drink for last. That tiny thing told me more about him than any car crash backstory. Makes you think about what actually sticks in your head after you turn the radio off. I get a lot of time to chew on stuff like that in the delivery van.

My friend's dad always kept a single playing card in his wallet, just a worn out three of hearts. Found out later his own dad taught him poker with that deck before he left, and that was the last card they ever played together. Never mentioned the guy leaving, just always had that card. Told me more about his quiet hurt than any big speech ever could. Those tiny choices people make, the stuff they carry, it builds a whole person right in front of you.
