Backstory prompts beat out mystery boxes, here's why I flipped
For months I kept pitching prompts that started with a hook like 'the door only opens for one person' and got thin, boring replies. Then in a thread about writing exercises someone posted a prompt from Chuck Palahniuk's class, it asked for a character who wants the wrong thing for a reason they can't admit. I tried it on a local writing group in Portland and every single piece had real conflict, nobody needed a twist to stay interested. Has anyone else found that giving the 'why' first gets better stories than saving the reveal for later?
