I used to map out every story beat before writing a single word. Now I just write the ending first and figure out the rest as I go.

I don't know when I switched, probably around 2020 when I got tired of outlining 15 chapters that never matched what actually came out. Now I just draft the final scene (like a specific conversation or image) and work backward from there. Has anyone else found that starting at the end makes the middle easier to write?

@milarodriguez nailed it. Everything's backwards now, end goals first.

Think about how we approach big projects in general nowadays, we all kind of start with the visual of the finished thing and then figure out the steps to get there.

Kinda disagree @miller.rowan, sometimes you gotta start with the messy middle to even know what the end should look like.
