My niece called my fantasy world predictable
I was telling my 14 year old niece about a kingdom I built for a story, and she said it was too safe. She pointed out that all my rulers were just and every problem got solved by magic. It hit different because she was right. I realized I avoid conflict in my writing even though real life has plenty of it. Has anyone else had a younger relative call out a blind spot in their work?

Honestly I kind of get where your niece is coming from but I don't think every world needs to be brutal and messed up to be compelling. People enjoy fantasy as an escape and there's something nice about a kingdom where things aren't constantly falling apart. Was she maybe just pushing back because that's what teenagers do to anything an adult says?

@tyler854 so was she mad about the lack of conflict or just wanted more grim backstory for the castle guards

Yeah @tyler854, teenagers just love arguing.
