Pro tip: I bombed a writing prompt by ignoring the deadline rule
Last week I tried this sci-fi prompt where you wake up as your pet, but I missed the part where it had to be 500 words max. I wrote 2000 words and the feedback thread closed before I could post. Do you guys usually stick to word limits or just write what feels right?

Nah, @kelly.charlie has a point, but here's the thing - some prompts are just structured badly. If the word limit actually hurts the story, that's on the prompt writer not you.

Stick to the limit man, the whole POINT of a prompt is the challenge it gives you. Breaking the rules just means you wrote a novel nobody asked for and thats on you.

Nobody asked for" is the key phrase there, but how do you actually tell when someone's pushing the prompt's spirit vs. just going over the word count? Is it really always that cut and dry?
