The day I stopped writing endings before I even started

I used to outline every prompt answer down to the last line, then fill in the blanks like I was painting by numbers. Last month I tried one of those "start mid-action" prompts from this sub and my first draft read like a grocery list with attitude. It hit me that I was forcing the destination, not letting the character earn it. Now I just dump two paragraphs of messy voice, find the turn, and let the ending show up on its own. Anyone else catch themselves doing this, or am I the only one who needed to unlearn the outline?

Man, that hits way too close to home. I spent years treating every draft like a math problem where the ending had to be solved before I put a single word down, and it made everything feel dead on arrival. Now I just chase the voice until something clicks, and the endings land way harder because they actually come from the character instead of a checklist.
