Dispute letters vs. phone calls: which actually works faster for removing late payments?

I read on a credit attorney's site that mailed disputes get more weight than phone calls because they create a paper trail, but I've had two reps clear things in 10 minutes that took my written dispute 45 days to fix, so which route have you all seen win out?
