I just found out a late payment can stay on your report for 7 years, even if you pay it off the next day.
I was looking at my own credit report online last week, just the free annual one. I saw a late payment from a store card I had back in 2018. I remembered that bill, I paid it as soon as I got the next statement. I figured since I fixed it, it wouldn't be a big deal anymore. But nope, it was right there, clear as day, marked '30 days late'. I did some digging and read on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau website that the clock starts from the date of the first missed payment that led to the delinquency. So even if you pay it a month later, that mark sticks for seven whole years from that original screw-up date. It really shows how long a single mistake can follow you. Has anyone had success getting something like that removed early, or is it just a waiting game?

Ever try that goodwill letter thing?

Used to think goodwill letters were a total waste of time. Then my sister got a late payment wiped from her report just by writing a short, honest note to the credit card company. Completely changed my view on it. Seems like it really depends on the bank and your history with them. I'd say it's always worth a shot before you try anything more complicated.

My friend in Cleveland got one removed after three years by calling the bank directly.
