Just found out my credit score dropped 40 points from one missed payment

I was checking my score on Credit Karma yesterday and saw it went from 720 down to 680. It was a single $35 payment on a store card I forgot about from three months back. I had no idea one small slip could hit that hard. Has anyone else had a score drop this much from one mistake?
