My neighbor told me he got a 50 point credit score jump from one small change

We were talking about home projects over the fence, and he mentioned he paid off a single old medical bill for $150 that was in collections. He said he didn't even know it was there until he checked his full report. The score update showed up about a month later. I always thought those small debts didn't matter much, but I guess they really do. Has anyone else seen a big bump from clearing up something small like that?

Yeah, that tracks. People really underestimate how much those old collections accounts hurt you, even if they're for tiny amounts. The scoring models treat any unpaid collection as a major red flag. Getting it removed is like taking a huge weight off your report. I had a similar thing with a forgotten library fee that went to collections. Fixed it and my score bounced back way more than I expected. It's always worth checking your full report for that kind of stuff.

Got a buddy named Marcus who had the same thing happen. He found out he had a $60 gym membership fee from like 2018 that he never paid because he moved and forgot to cancel. He said he figured it was so small it wouldn't matter, but when he finally paid it off his credit jumped almost 40 points out of nowhere. He was pissed at himself for ignoring it for years over sixty bucks. He checks all his old accounts now once a month just to be sure nothing's hiding. Really opened my eyes to how those little things add up on your report.
