PSA: My credit score tanked 40 points because I forgot about an old gym membership in Denver
Honestly, I moved out of Denver like two years ago and thought I cancelled that Planet Fitness membership. Nope, turns out they kept billing my old card $10 a month for like 18 months. I only found out when I went to refinance my car loan last week and my score dropped from 740 to 700. The collection agency just hit my report with no warning. Has anyone else had old subscriptions mess up their credit like this?

Oh man, I totally used to roll my eyes at people who said you had to check your credit report regularly. Figured it was just paranoid stuff. But then I had a similar thing happen with an old streaming subscription I forgot to cancel. It was only like $8 a month but after a year they sent it to collections and bam, my score dropped by 35 points. Now I check my credit reports every few months like crazy. Have you tried disputing it with the credit bureaus yet?

Whoa I gotta disagree a little bit actually. I feel like disputing stuff is a huge pain and sometimes it's faster to just pay the $60 and move on with your life instead of fighting it for weeks. @nancyn69 pretty much nailed it with the storage unit thing, those small debts are just not worth the headache in my book.

yeah I actually read somewhere that gym memberships and streaming services are like the top two things that sneak up on people's credit. apparently it's super common cause they're small amounts and you just forget about em. I heard a guy on a podcast say he had a similar thing with an old Netflix account he shared with his ex, she kept using it for months after they split and he ended up with a collection notice for like $60. it's crazy how something that seems so small can mess up your credit that bad. the worst part is you probably didn't even get any letters cause they were sending them to your old Denver address right? that's what happened to my cousin with a storage unit he forgot about.
