Rant: I used to say store cards were a trap, then I ran the numbers at a Kohl's in Boise
I always brushed off store credit cards as a bad idea, mostly because my dad drilled that into me growing up. Then my wife dragged me into a Kohl's last Saturday and the cashier said we could save 30 percent on a $180 purchase just by signing up. I did the math on my phone right there in the aisle and that one discount was worth more than any rewards card I have ever had. What changed my mind was seeing the store card had no annual fee and I could pay it off online the same day. Now I'm wondering if I've been leaving free money on the table at other stores I go to all the time.
