Serious question, has anyone else had a credit limit increase backfire?
I asked my card company for a $2,000 bump, got it, and my score dropped 12 points because my average account age took a hit. Anyone know a better way to do this?

The average age thing is a real trap. They treat a new credit line like a brand new account, even on an old card. Next time, just wait for the automatic increases they sometimes offer. Those don't usually trigger a hard pull or reset the account date, so your average age stays safe. It's annoying you have to game the system like this.

Doesn't this just feel like everything now? Wyatt_mitchell26, you have to know the secret rules for basic stuff like credit, phone plans, even returning an item. The system is built so the normal choice, like asking for a credit increase, punishes you. You need inside info just to not get screwed over. It turns every simple task into homework.
