Showerthought: I asked for a credit limit increase and got denied, but then my score went up 22 points
Last month I called my card company and asked for a bump from $2,000 to $5,000. They shot me down on the spot, said my account was too new at 8 months. I hung up mad, but here is the weird part, my score climbed 22 points about 6 weeks later anyway. Turns out the hard pull barely mattered and paying down my balance before the statement date did way more work than begging for a limit ever would. So now I just ignore the limit and focus on the balance date. Anyone else get denied and then see their score jump for no clear reason? Would love to know if that is normal or if I just got lucky.
Yeah this happened to me too, almost the exact same thing. I asked for a bump from 1500 to 4000 and they said no because my history was too short, and I was pretty annoyed about it for a week. Then maybe a month later my score jumped like 18 points and I could not figure out why at first. What I finally figured out was it had nothing to do with the request at all, it was me paying my card down to almost zero a few days before the statement closed so the balance they reported was tiny. Once I started doing that every month my score kept creeping up on its own. The limit itself does not matter much if the reported balance stays low, that is the part nobody tells you when you are starting out.
