The $35 credit monitoring app that exposed a hidden card I forgot about
Back in March I signed up for a credit monitoring service to keep tabs on my score after a rough refinance. It cost me $35 for the year, and last week it flagged a department store card I opened in 2019 and completely forgot to close. That card had a $220 balance carrying interest at 29%, which was quietly dragging my utilization from 12% to 18%. I paid it off the same day and saw my score jump 14 points this morning. Has anyone else found forgotten accounts through monitoring, or do you prefer pulling your own reports every few months? Just curious what works for other folks.
