The $4 credit score sim I laughed at actually works

Last month I paid $4 for one of those DIY credit sim calculators off a random blog. I figured I knew my score, but it showed my utilization rate was hurting me at 34%. I paid down two cards to get under 10% and waited 6 weeks. My score jumped 47 points, which I genuinely thought was a scam. Has anyone else tried one of these sims and gotten real results, or was I just overdue for a boost?

Keep in mind that paying down your cards usually helps no matter what, but those sims aren't really magic. The math they use is basically the same formula most lenders follow, so it can point you in the right direction. Your 6 week wait and the timing of your statement cycles probably did more work than the $4 tool itself. I've seen people get similar jumps just from lowering their utilization without any sim at all, so you might've been due for it anyway.
